Cover Reveal of Remembering Giraffes

We are delighted to reveal the cover of this year’s Remembering Giraffes, featuring a tender moment between a mother and her calf, captured by Kenyan photographer Gurcharan Roopra at Lake Nakuru, Kenya.

The image shows Nubian giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis camelopardalis), a subspecies of the Northern giraffe. Until recently, part of this population was classified separately as Rothschild’s giraffe, but genetic and morphological research has shown them to be the same, and Rothschild’s giraffe is now included within the Nubian giraffe subspecies.

The Nubian giraffe holds special scientific significance: it was the first giraffe subspecies ever formally described, making it the nominate subspecies from which the species takes its scientific name.

Today, just 3,977 Nubian giraffes remain in the wild, a figure that includes individuals previously referred to as Rothschild’s giraffe. Nubian giraffes are found across western Ethiopia, eastern South Sudan, Uganda, and parts of Kenya. In Kenya, many now live outside their original range, following carefully targeted conservation efforts to establish secure, viable populations in key protected areas.

This powerful and intimate image is a reminder not only of the beauty of giraffes, but of how much there still is to protect — and why their future matters so deeply.

This year’s foreword will be written by Stephanie Fennessy, Executive Director, Co-Founder (along with husband Julian, Director of Conservation) of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF). This international science-based conservation organisation provides innovative approaches to save giraffe in the wild and we are deeply grateful for their support and insights for our 11th book in the Remembering Wildlife series.

As usual, we will be running a Kickstarter campaign in the spring to fund the new book, which is due for publication in early October, so please do keep looking out for updates!

The competition for 20 places in the book opens tomorrow, Saturday 10th January, at 9am GMT and you can register in advance below.
